The Welsh Books Council or Cyngor Llyfrau Cymru was established in 1961 under the name of Cyngor Llyfrau Cymraeg (Which translates as the 'Welsh (Language) Books Council'). Today it is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government. The Council's aims are to promote the interest in Welsh language books and English language books of interest to Wales. To promote the publishing industry, and assist and support authors by offering a number of services and distributing grants. They offer design and editorial services for publishers, distribute grants for authors and publishers, services for libraries, wholesale books and associated material.
The Books Council’s headquarters are at Castell Brychan, Aberystwyth and by now there is also a Distribution Centre on the outskirts of the town at Glanyrafon Enterprise Park. The Council employs 49 permanent staff between both locations. The distribution centre has an annual turnover of around £5 million (net).
